should we be scheduling time for creativity?
a poem
The Fifth Pillar is emotional intelligence (EQ) with a pulse: think EQ in action, not theory. This is where I stretch, stumble, and grow in my approach to both writing and the pursuit of a deeply fulfilled life.
Should we be scheduling time for creativity?
Obviously, yes.
So long as we remember this one vital rule: it’s an invitation
not an order.
Creativity is not like fast fashion
we can not summon it on demand.
Creativity does not perch like the barn owl
wise with patience for an opportune moment.
Creativity will not wait quietly
to be called forward.
Creativity is like a waterfall
an everflowing channel.
Creativity can flow rapidly
and pay a little visit at any random time.
Creativity does have a life of its own
and will stop showing up if ignored.
Creativity will bless us
if
we continue to invite it back
as regularly scheduled
consistently prioritized
and desperately nurtured.
Should we be scheduling time for creativity?
Obviously, yes, but only always.

Ohh I love this!
I was just thinking about a similar thing the other day. It’s been a rocky few weeks of writing for me, the Muse or creativity or whatever you want to call it hasn't felt as with me as normal. And for a moment I was thinking about how I could “do more” and “make it happen”… And then, I don’t even know exactly what happened, but I just sort of softened into the experience, and what’d ya know, the writing started to feel a bit better.
As someone who has pushed and willed and forced so much stuff in my life, it actually makes me so happy, and feels like such a perfect lesson, that the creative process does not work that way.
You captured this idea beautifully, Kaylen.
Loved the poll, too! That was fun :)
I like the idea of it as an invitation. Discipline as an invitation for creativity to join you at the table, and sometimes it shows up and sometimes it doesn’t. But as long as you have a standing date with creativity thats all that matters
