I can see a whistle being useful to signal help, but a mirror might work just has well. I have a metal (unbreakable) mirror with a hole in it, which looks like it’s for a lanyard but it’s actually for looking through it. The idea is that if a helicopter is searching for you, you point and reflect sunlight at them. The hole is so you can see if it’s hitting them. Maybe you could use the mirror to start a fire too?

Thank you, I’ll be helpful! And I have way better survival toys. Two non-negotiable are my ham rad and a solar power station. I don’t know how many things that is because I need a solar panel, batter, etc. Comms are useful. No need satellites and SIM cards when you send an email over a wire with a radio signal

Kqylen, your essay was truly enjoyable to read, yet if you are on an Island I'd assume that island in within the ocean, hence there you can always easily make salt yourself by simply letting the salt water from the ocean evaporate. And I do travel everywhere with: salt, a pepper mill, a Swiss Army Knife with 72 functions, a bit of cord, and a super thin emergency blanket (with the gold foil). The tarp was a smart idea, as no woven leafy shelter is as solid as a tarp, and it could even be used to transport someone.

Jay!! Thanks so much for reading and for your wilderness brilliance! I should think about investing in a Swiss Army knife… and you make a great point about the sea salt. I feel silly now. 🌊

I was lucky enough to read this while still nestled in bed this morning. And let me tell you, this post has single-handedly set me up for a wonderful Tuesday! The first page of the guidebook made me laugh literally out loud! Sunflower lovers do not mess around when it comes to their love for Sunflowers! It was fated that you would each get the others favorite flower and both be open to gifting the joy across the table. My husband had to remind me to water my clump, which, unfortunately, is very true to the reality of how the clump and I are also alike. Cheers to support systems we have all around us, especially our deserted island strandees.

🥹 I love that hubby reminds you to water clump & “water” yourself. I am trying to do the same!! Perks of sunshine on today’s lunch and maybe an afternoon walk?!

I think you did a walking team meeting once, maybe we could try that together for a huddle… 👣

I love this essay so much! Also, the only reason I can think of to bring a whistle would be to scare off the wild zombie boars? Maybe?

Please share when your flower grows! I’d love to see it 😍😍

Mesa!!!! You are invited to the island and I will make you my special fish delight with salt from the sea as Kate here in the comments brilliantly pointed out. We will use our whistles to scare the crap out of the wild zombie boars 🤣

I will report back on my baby poppy!! Love you.

If you’re on an island - unless it’s situated in a fresh water lake - you’d have plenty of salt available from the sea around you.

I’m with you — no whistle. Salt for the win! Haha. This was a fun read. Also, I really like the phrase ‘concrete jungle hooligan’ — I may have to borrow that. :)

Is the whistle to scare off unwanted creatures? Because ain't nobody hearing that on a deserted island and coming to save your arse. I might swap out that useless book for fishing gear. A kit of course.

"HOW TO SURVIVE ON A DESERTED ISLAND:

Step One: Get a Whistle."

Your writing taught me just how achingly beautiful and emotional it is to write about nature. I have always had love and respect for you, but this essay prompt challenge leveled up the way I see your chapters in a WHOLE NEW LIGHT. Xx
